A big Thank You from Next Gen to all children & young people. parents, local residents, councillors, schools, local businesses, other Wakefield community oganisations, Lightwaves users and council officers. Together we did save Lightwaves from closure! Council Leader Cllr. Peter Box has offered full Council assistance and support so now it is up to all of us to make Lightwaves a fantastic facility for local people. To make it a success we will need your active input, support and involvement. You could volunteer to help run the centre, promote what we are doing, raise funds, help out with activities, apply to become a Trustee or provide suggestions on how Lightwaves can be developed to meet your needs and interests.

Sport Relief 2012: one big sunny sports party! |
|
Wednesday, 28 March 2012 |
|
Hundreds of people enjoyed the Sport Relief event on the Stanley Royd playing fields last Sunday. Children, young and older people run the 1, 3 or 6 Miles in surprisingly sunny and hot conditions, enjoyed the games and entertainment on offer and supported the good causes of Sport Relief.
Well done to all the runners! and a big thank you to Adrian Robinson and staff from Lightwaves, Shaun Selby and staff from Sport & Active Lifestyles, Groundworks, Julie Mills from Pinders Primary, Georgina Swift from Wakefield PCT, The Manchest University students, Wakey Wheeled Cats and staff & volunteers from Next Generation. Without your support & enthousiasm we couldn't have done it.
Pictured below is the fastest runner on the 3 miles, Usman Zahir, supported by his daughter Ruby.
Keep an eye on 'read more' where we'll upload more pictures of the event.

Carrying the Torch for Lightwaves |
|
Tuesday, 29 November 2011 |
|
Update 9th of January:
We have had a meeting at the Council to discuss our proposal to make Lightwaves a community-run facility. The Council is now working on a report that will be send to all relevant departments to have a look at any issues. Following that, the report will go to the Council's Cabinet for a decision. This is now planned for mid-February.
We think it's positive that the first hurdle is taken and that the proposal is still in the process of being considered for an asset transfer.
Please contact us if you would like more information, have some ideas or want to be involved.
2012 is the Olympic year with a focus on encouraging more young people to become activily involveded in sport. By keeping Lightwaves open we want to ensure that future generations of Wakefield people will still have great sporting & leisure opportunities.
You can sign a petition at the local shops & chippy to support this, or go online to:
www.ipetitions.com/petition/keep-lightwaves-open/
Please pass this on to your friends and other potential users. We need as many people as possible to join our campaign to keep the lights on in Lightwaves for the next generation.
